Baked Ziti
Ok, so tonight we had baked Ziti, but dont laugh - without the Ziti! I didn't have any Ziti (Penne in English) pasta yet I still wanted to make this dish so thought I would try with small shell pasta. Here goes:
To make the sauce:
Sautee Onions until they are golden brown or looking a bit see threw
Once onions are ready, pour in one can of Tomato Juice then use the can to pour in 2 cans full of water
Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano and if you wish hot peppers. Mix well and bring the sauce to a boil
Once the sauce is boiling, I always add a spoon of Osem chicken soup mix. I find this takes away the acidity of tomatoes reducing heartburn. You can do the same using a spoon of sugar. You do not have to do either if you dont want to.
Add raw pasta to the boiling sauce and cook according to packet instructions making sure all the pasta is covered in sauce (some pastas cook quicker than others). Stir occasionally.
Once pasta is cooked, transfer to an oven proof dish. There should be some liquid still with the pasta - do not strain it.
Mix pasta in dish with some grated cheese (I used regular cheddar coz thats what I have in). Top pasta with more cheese and bake in a preheated oven on 175 for 30 minutes
Et Voila!
This tasted absolutely delicious and I love it because it only dirtied one pot! Thanks Abi!

Umm Shterns u know i'm gonna start coming for supper...
ReplyDeletejust a tip for those who are going to make this recipe: the quantity of pasta is half a pound, (average, half a box/packet). But the amazing thing with this recipe is its so difficult to mess up!
ReplyDeleteI accidentally put a whole pound of pasta in and was able to add sauce and water and adjust the seasoning and it still came out tasting DELISH!
oh, for a spicy baked ziti, i put in crushed red pepper flakes!
Thanks so much Shternz! u have made lots of pple happy here!!
